Official Rules 1980 to 1997

Official Rules for Labor Day Battle
All decisions of the judges or referees are final. The event will start at 12:30 PM on Labor Day with weigh in and sign up at 12:00 noon. The tug-of-war will consist of the highest even number of teams. For example, if nine teams are entered only the eight teams with the highest points will be allowed to compete in the tug-of-war. This is very important since the tug-of-war counts double points.

Pairings
Example, if there are eight teams in the tug-of-war the pairings would be as follows.
1st place vs 5th place — Pull one
2nd place vs 6th place — Pull two
3rd place vs 7th place — Pull three
4th place vs 8th place — Pull four

The winners would Advance to the Final Pull off.
Pull one winners vs Pull three winners
Pull two winners vs Pull four winners
The winners pull to decide first and second places. The losers will pull to decide third and fourth places.
Order of Events

1. Wheelbarrow Race
2. Bucket Brigade
3. Man Carry Rely
4. Obstacle Course
5. Vehicle Push
6. Stake Drive
7. Shoveling Contest
8. Tug-of-war

Wheelbarrow Race
Three Man Teams
The teams line up at the start with two men with two men in each wheelbarrow with one pushing. The wheelbarrow is pushed a distance of 50 feet where a change is made. One of the riders takes over as the pusher and the other two ride. They go back to the start and there they make the final change over. The rider who hasn’t pushed yet takes over and pushes the other two down to the finish line. When the team finally crosses the finish, each member will have pushed the wheelbarrow once.

Note; At no time can any part of the riders body touch the ground while the wheelbarrow is rolling. If the wheelbarrow falls over or a rider falls out, the pusher must stop and the rider must get back into the wheelbarrow. Then and only then can they resume the race. The change over must be made behind the lines. Wheelbarrows will be furnished the Labor Day Association.

Bucket Brigade
Five Man Teams
Each team will have to fill a 55 gallon drum half full of water from a full 55 gallon drum 20 feet away. All five men must stay in one straight line between the two barrels. Each team will be given two gallon plastic buckets to transport the water. The bucket must be passed through all five men going to and from the empty barrel. The Labor Day Association will furnish the buckets.

Man Carry Relay
Two man teams—four men total
The first team starts out, one man carrying the other and goes a distance of 50 feet. They switch positions come back to tag the second two men. The second two men do the same as the first two men. By the end of the race every man should have carried and been carried one time. The total distance of the race is 200 feet.

Note; At no time can any part of the body of the man being carried touch the ground between the change over lines. You may carry your team mate in any fashion you want as long as the above rule is complied with. All change overs must be made behind the lines.

Obstacle Course
Two man teams
The course will consist of eight obstacles. The object will be to go through the course in the fastest combined time possible and at the same time completing all the obstacles. The course will have two lanes so a member of two different teams will compete at one time. The first obstacle is the overhead ladder which is 8 ½ feet high with 6 rungs. Each man will start from a standing start and on the signal of the referee then run to the overhead ladder, jump up to the first rung and swing from one rung to the next, suspending your weight on each rung including the last.

The second obstacle is the tires. These are 10 regular car tires wired together in a football type formation. A man must step in each tire. He cannot miss a tire. He may skip a tire and come back or stop and get it but if he does not get the tire he is disqualified.

The third obstacle is the Wall. The wall is eight feet high with a 45 degree ramp going up to the 4 foot top and then another 45 degree going back down. All you have to do is get over it. This includes crawling and sliding.

The fourth obstacle is the hay bales. There are three of them. The hay bales are stacked on their sides two high. Each man must cross the bales. He is not penalized for knocking over the bales.

The fifth obstacle is a 55 gallon drum laid on its side with both ends cut out. Each man must crawl through the barrel.

Vehicle Push
Seven man teams–Six pushers and one driver
Two teams will line up behind two pick-up trucks. When the signal is given the teams will start pushing. The course is 100 feet long. The fast time wins. The driver will be seated in the truck before the signal is given. The driver must be completely in the vehicle and stay in it until the vehicle crosses the finish line.

Stake Drive
Two man teams
Two men with an 8 pound sledge hammer each will be required to drive a 1 inch diameter steel rod 18 inches into the ground. The men must alternate their strikes at the spike. The stake will 32 inches long with a washer welded 4 inches from the top. Each team will drive the stake down to where the washer touches the ground. Fast time wins. Each rod will be driven 10 inches into the ground before the start.

Shoveling Contest
Two man teams
First team to fill up a 55 gallon drum with sand wins. The two men will shovel sand from a pile behind a line into a drum 12 feet away. Shovels will be furnished by the Labor Day Association. The drum must be completely full. When either team member thinks the drum is full he calls for the referee to stop the clock while another team member strikes off the drum with a board to make sure it is full. If it is not full the team must continue until it is full. The referee will tell the team to resume shoveling at which time he will restart the clock.

Tug-of-War
Ten men teams
A flag will be tied to the center of a rope. There is 15 foot space separating the two teams. The team to pull the flag over their own line wins.
